This kind of protection of the monuments of culture is a part of the essential activity of Institutes for the preservation of monuments of culture and it is performed parallel to the expert work of investigation, identification, valorization, revalorization, classification, registration and marking of the cultural heritage, its keeping, care, and maintenance, conservation, restoration, reconstruction, dislocation, revitalization, prevention, supervision, restitution, presentation, popularization and any other form of protection of monuments of culture.

The legal protection department of the N. I. Institute for preservation of monuments of culture has been in function for more than twenty years.

As part of its activity, several building complexes are protected by law: the old Bitola bazaar, the old town core, more than 900 stationary individual monuments of culture of everyday and sacral architecture, over 164 archaeological localities have been registered for designation as monuments of culture, noted in Index of stationary monuments of culture on the territory of municipality of Bitola and noted in the Central Index of stationary monuments of culture of R. Macedonia.

Management and legal actions have been undertaken for more than 800 buildings for monuments of culture, through responses to requests for expert opinion, opinions concerning investment technical documents, decisions, agreements and other documents regulating the relations between the Institute and the participants of conservatory works of the monuments of culture with the owners of the buildings on which the conservation is undertaken, and conservation and restoration of the facades, additions, reconstructions, etc.
